If you think that beta-carotene is able to help you stay healthy and look great, then you can really go for it. A lot of people think about it and that’s how I once thought that beta-carotene is something that ideally affects the young look and health. Studies show that it has a positive effect on health, however, it has not been proven definitively whether or not the ingestion of beta-carotene positively, harmful, and maybe indifferent to health.

What is beta-carotene and karetoids?

β-Carotene  – an organic chemical compound, vitamin A provitamin and the most active isomer of it. It neutralizes radicals in the body, it is used as a drug in diseases of sight and skin.

Carotenoids  – a group of organic chemical compounds, unsaturated hydrocarbons with a special structure, yellow, red, orange and pink plant dyes, occurring in chloroplasts and chromatophores. Carotenoids belong to natural antioxidants. Carotenoids belong to the precursors of vitamin A and are the main dietary source of this vitamin in humans. In the digestive tract a retinal is formed, which is then transformed into retinol. One of the functions of carotenoids is protection against reactive oxygen species formed during photosynthesis (antioxidant activity).

How does beta-carotene affect health?

Beta-carotene is not a substance to be avoided, but it still belongs to quite unexplored substances. However, scientists are confident that he is able to lower blood cholesterol levels and thereby reduce the risk of heart disease. For now, however, it is not known how strongly affects the body. Moreover, the researchers do not know whether every human being is able to react in the same way to beta-carotene.

Positive beta-carotene effect

Carotenoids are substances that can protect the thymus, the main gland of the immune system, which improves immunity and protects against infections. Based on many studies, it can be concluded that the higher the level of carotenoids in the blood, there is less chance that cellular disorders will occur. It has also been proven that they have a positive effect on the function of white blood cells. The most commonly used is beta-carotene as a factor for photodermatoses.

What happens when beta-carotene is missing?

When it turns out that the concentration of carotenoids in the blood is too low, it is possible in this situation to observe a symptom that is characteristic of those that occur in the case of vitamin A deficiency, namely:

  • Blindness
  • Callous, flaky and dry skin
  • Dried, easily breaking hair
  • Dry mucous membranes
  • Fertility problems
  • Problems with growth in children
  • Brittle, slowly growing nails

The relationship between vitamin A and carotenoids is that, as a result of the action of the dial, zinc and vitamin C, the body metabolizes vitamin A in carotenoids. If this type of metabolism occurs in a proper way, then the catenoids are able to perform the function of vitamin A.

Too much vitamin A

Of course, vitamin A is an essential vitamin that allows you to function properly, but you must be aware that you do not want to take it in excess. If you decide to take too much vitamin A, there is a good chance that it will cause damage to the eyes, bones, skin problems, disorders in the central nervous system and many other problems. In addition, excess of this vitamin may have toxic effects on the liver and be unfavorable to the reproductive system.
